:Get the look: For getting caught in the rain.

Frizz.

It’s inevitable.

It’s hearbreaking.

It’s enough reason to cancel all instagram photo (or…video?) ops and just go for the facebook status instead.

Hi, I’m Sara, and I’m here to help you.

There are 2 real things you can do to fight this. The best option is to use kick ass products that will help tame your mane. The second best is to find a quick fix, chic hairstyle that you can whip up in a snap (like let’s say… in the bathroom at barnes and noble after you just got caught in the rain.). I’d love to share both with you.

#1. Product. PRODUCT. AND MORE PRODUCT.

I’m not sure how many products you are used to using, but during the summer leave-in conditioner is an absolute must. Here are my favorites.

20130703-232340.jpg

Fine: All Soft’s Supple Touch (Right)
Medium/Coarse: Smooth Lock’s Stay Sleek (Middle)
Curly: Curvaceous Conditioner (Left)

Here’s the big picture.

Frizz is actually your hairs way of saying, “I NEED MOISTURE!”. It is dry and tired and most likely a little damaged.

Think about it this way.
Your hair strand is like shingles on a roof (the shingles are called the cuticle layer). All of the shingles go the same direction and ideally will lay flat against each other. But when things happen (like when you are blow drying your hair upside down and pushing the air UP your strand and against those shingles, instead of going with the flow) you end up opening all of those shingles up and they freak out, ultimately freaking YOU OUT.

This is why product makes all of the difference. Balancing out the moisture in your hair will not only weigh that frizz down a little bit and give it the drink of water that it needs, but it also creates a protective barrier against humidity.

How to use the leave in?
I’m so glad you asked!
Fine hair: Take the Supple Touch and spray 3-4 pumps around your hair, using a wide tooth comb or detangling brush, comb the product through your hair.
Medium/Coarse hair: Take the Stay Sleek and pump a nickel sized amount into your palm, rub hands together and then distribute the product through the hair starting with your ends and then moving towards your hairline and root area once most of the product is off of your hands.
Curly hair: In the shower after shampooing, apply the conditioner as normal. DO NOT RINSE OUT. Leave this conditioner in, the Curvaceous line is specially formulated to be left or rinsed out. Leaving it in will give you the most control over your wild and beautiful locks.

Et Voila! You hair is now coated with a protective lacquer of product to give you the most out of your day, whether you typically blow dry-air dry-slick back-etc. And if all else fails and the humidity is too overwhelming, or that rain storm started right when you parked, don’t panic just move on to tip #2.

#2.

Always. And I mean always. Carry 2 hair pins.
They can and will save your life, over and over. And not just because you can pick any lock, but because you can tame YOUR own.

Braids are a really easy way to look put together on the outside when you’re definitely not feeling it on the inside. To be honest, this braid that I’m about to show you is my absolute go-to when I’ve hit the snooze too many times and have 10 minutes to look presentable and fashionable for my clients.

So here it is, the Princess Leah Braid.

20130708-105001.jpg

You might notice in these photos that my hair is pretty messy, the purpose of the braid isn’t to look perfect and polished. There is something effortless and incredibly sexy about a look that looks thrown together. (If you want to make it look more polished, use a brush/comb and hold your sections tighter to your head.)

Here are the steps!

20130708-105227.jpg

Run your fingers through your hair and breathe. YOU WILL LOOK PUT TOGETHER IN NO TIME.
Take a vertical section and seperate into 3 strands.
The top strand will go over the middle strand (and become the new middle), you then pick up a little more hair along your ear/nape to combine with the bottom strand and bring that up and over the middle strand (becoming the new middle).
Repeat
Repeat
Repeat
Repeat

If your hair is incredibly long, well… get a haircut. JUST KIDDING. Continue the traditional 3 strand braid all the way down the length of your hair and then you can do two options, either wrap and lay the braid against your nape area, OR, go Princess Leah style and spin it up into a side bun. I like mine messy and silly. But then again, I have a flair for the dramatic.

!!!!!!

That’s it.
My top 2 frizz fighting tips. Since we live in such a beautifully humid and rainy city I am sure there will be much more to come on this topic.

Please share your favorite frizz-taming products and your photos of your braids. I want to learn what is working for you or where I can help fill in the gaps.

Cheers to good hair days even during the rainy season!
XOXO
Sara
